Why Going off the grid when one can live in comfort?
Product of church preachings?
Madness of hippies?
Why simplify the life?
Our lives seem so stressful nowadays, to the point that I feel like we weren’t meant to live this way.
People have been born into the system that trains them from the early childhood to seek comfort and convenience at all costs. This so-called "comfort" (should read as slavery, because one needs to pay for it) constitutes the success in life.
The success is measured by the size of the house - the bigger the better. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average home size in the United States was 2,349 square feet in 2007, up from 1,400 square feet in 1970...
But wait a minute. So we are growing for the sake of growth. Is there a reason why the family needs 4 bathrooms? The last one will be flushed only once a year on Christmas Day. I live with my brother and share one bathroom. None of us had heart attacks when bumping into each other.
Back to growing for the sake of growth. There is something that we know that behaves same way as we do... What is it? You probably heard of it before. You may have one? I hope not. Ready? Cancer.
Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.
Civilization is a term used for disease in which abnormal people build their houses without control and are able to invade other territories to build more houses. Civilization inhabitants can spread to other parts of the country through the help of bulldozers and polluting systems.
Mother Nature can not email, call or write a letter. But can definitely strike back.
Sounds like she is letting us know that we are heading in wrong direction.
Anyway. Back to the subject. Going off the grid. My Godfather and I own a parcel of land in north Georgia. We camped a lot there in summer. In winter is too cold to camp, so we agreed to build a little house for winter.
But we decided not spread the cancer at this time. We cut the trees only where the house will be located. We will have no electricity, public sewer or water. In a future we will get a well with hand pump.
The point here is we decided to live sustainable life where we try to limit our footprint on environment.
